All the way through this Chiffon, Ronette & Crystal smugly look on with their 'We know something you don't' mentality, enjoying the song thoroughly as back-up singers. We also see Seymour turn from a sweet, innocent young botanical genius, into a prospective murderer, fueled by his desire for fame, fortune & the girl of his dreams. We see the plant turn from an inanimate bit of foliage to a monsterous creature with a persuasive manner & wicked mind. In fact, with some convincing from the plant, he decides on his first victim almost instantaneously: Orin. ![]() This (along with the offers of fortune, fame & the like) is what changes Seymour's mind about murdering for the plant. We also get to see on stage an example of the domestic abuse that is contained within Orin & Audrey's relationship as he slaps her for forgetting her jumper. © ACT One 1996-2023 ~ Registered Charity No.However, when told that it can't have any more blood, the plant shows just how aware & intelligent it really is, proving it is anything but an inanimate object it not only begins to talk to Seymour, but starts to sing! It tries to bribe Seymour into killing someone so it can satisfy its need for blood, offering him fortune, fame & Audrey. The show is very much a tongue in cheek comedy in the style of 1950s B-movie, and has been made into a film in 1986 with Rick Moranis of Honey I shrunk The Kids fame, and comedian Steve Martin playing roles. Finally, Seymour begins to realise the true motives of the plant – world domination, and throws himself into the plant in one final attempt to stop the advance. So before too long the blood makes way for fresh flesh, including Audrey’s sadistic boyfriend dentist, Orin, Mr Mushnik, and Audrey herself. The plant which also grows a voice agrees a pact with Seymour to attract this publicity, provided he keeps feeding the plant. ![]() He sweetly names the plant Audrey II after his co-assistant and love of his life, Audrey, although she takes a little while to realise it! He sets about trying to grow the plant, but this is fruitless, until he discovers by accident the plant’s thirst for blood!īefore too long the strange and interesting plant grows and demands more and more blood, but with it comes fame and fortune for Seymour.
